How to Hug A Lion

How do you cuddle a lion? It’s not exactly something most people would attempt. Lions, fierce and majestic, demand respect. Yet, life often places us face-to-face with human "lions"—those with strong, intimidating personalities who can be charming one moment and ferocious the next. I grew up with one.

My mother, with her booming laughter and quick wit, was also a storm of control and sharp words. Her moods taught me how to read the air like a weathered navigator—when to be silent, when to hide, and when to run. She roared, and I learned the cost of misjudging her temper: a wooden spoon across my cheek or the crushing disappointment of missing hockey practice.

Navigating her world taught me resilience. I discovered how to protect my boundaries, find my sanctuary in music and solitude, and eventually stand tall when the moment called for it. Understanding the rhythm of intimidating people isn’t about taming them; it’s about learning how and when to step forward, stay grounded, or walk away for good. And sometimes, the greatest strength is knowing that cuddling a lion isn’t always worth the scars.
